VERSUS: amor noir
SPIRIT Fashion Show: PALADIN
Spring 2016
Even though they are often seen as contrasting emotions, Love and Loathing are two sister souls. The strength of affection we can feel is just as powerful and real as the hurt that it can bring.
VERSUS: amor noir is an expression of the relationship between the passion and grace of our love and the ferocity and strength of our pain. The name amor noir embodies the conflict of a Black Love. This two piece line paints the story of how within ourselves, we both have to shed our skin to embrace love and re-armor ourselves within our hurt. It uses strong textures, natural patterns, and the stark contrast of solely black and white to show the symbiotic bond and the stark contrast we face when embodied in Love and Loathing.
noir amor takes quos and hints from how our emotions push and pull on our heart, soul, and mind and it’s respective responses and effects to create a powerful yet graceful modern / avant garde blend.

(right) This look is made of a pseudo white snake skin leather. It’s the next look after Loving where the heart begins to become weathered and hard. This look is inspired by Dame Vaako from The Chronicles of Riddick.
(left) This piece is inspired by the Other Mother from Coraline. It is based on the feelings of Hate and Loathing. It is all black, hard and angular, with a high sharp collar made from black metal wire and zip ties.
SPIRIT is CMU’s multicultural Black awareness organization. Our fashion show this year is based around the idea of defending identities against stereotyping, in response to the increased coverage of cultural appropriation in the fashion industry. But stereotyping does not stop at fashion and if overlooked, it sustains racism. One of the best ways to fight this negativity is to go behind the scenes, learn from direct sources, and share oneself earnestly. That way, we can get to the heart of what makes these identities and cultures truly unique, complex, beautiful, and something to be respected and celebrated.
